Ivins, Utah

Red cliffs and lava beds, with Snow Canyon on the northern border.

IThe Guide

Ivins lies on the west side of Washington County, just west of Santa Clara and St. George, with Snow Canyon State Park, the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and the Red Mountain Wilderness directly on its northern border. The city began as thirteen farm households on the Santa Clara Bench between 1922 and 1926 and was incorporated in 1935. Its 2020 census population was 8,978.

Water made the town: the Santa Clara Bench canal, finished in 1914, and Ivins Reservoir, built in 1918, which now lies inside Fire Lake Park. Growth stayed slow until Kayenta arrived in the early 1980s, and Snow Canyon Parkway, completed in 1998, gave the city a second way in. Today Ivins is home to Tuacahn Center for the Arts, the Center for the Arts in Kayenta and the Kayenta Art Village.

IIThe Place

Inside Ivins

The setting

Ivins sits at about 3,100 feet at the foot of Red Mountain, with red Navajo sandstone cliffs and expansive lava beds around it. Snow Canyon State Park, 7,400 acres of sandstone and lava flows, was certified an Urban Night Sky Place in 2025, and the city adopted outdoor lighting standards early. To the south, the Bureau of Land Management’s 6,500-acre Santa Clara River Reserve holds trails and rock art.

The homes

Ivins describes its character as a setting at the base of Red Mountain, farmland, a variety of residential areas and restrained scale: residential buildings are limited to 25 feet, and city design standards give a mix of architectural styles a somewhat consistent look. Kayenta, in the west, is planned around large lots and low-profile southwestern-style homes. Black Desert Resort adds a golf-and-resort community of residences among the lava beds.

Living here

Snow Canyon has more than 38 miles of hiking trails and a three-mile paved path. Tuacahn’s 2,500-seat outdoor amphitheater sits in Padre Canyon, and the Center for the Arts at Kayenta stages more than 50 events a year. Ivins maintains 13 parks and 13 miles of paved multi-use trails, including Fire Lake Park, opened in 2016 with a swimming area, and 12-acre Unity Park.
