Hurricane, Utah

Two state parks, a 1906 downtown and the valley’s golf.

IThe Guide

Hurricane is the hub of the valley between St. George and Zion: about 53 square miles, 20,036 residents at the 2020 census, and State Route 9 running through it as State Street. Eleven households took up farmland here in 1906, and the old downtown is a National Register historic district with homes and buildings from that first year. It holds the Hurricane Valley Heritage Park Museum, Pioneer Park, the Pioneer Corner Museum and the library.

Two state parks lie within the city: Quail Creek, with a 600-acre reservoir at the north end, and Sand Hollow, whose 1,322-acre warm-water reservoir borders the south and opens onto red sand dunes for off-road riding. The city’s golf includes Sky Mountain, Copper Rock and Sand Hollow Resort, and downtown hosts Peach Days. Springdale is about 30 minutes east; Las Vegas is about two hours.

IIThe Place

Inside Hurricane

The setting

Hurricane sits at about 3,250 feet on the Hurricane benchland, with red rock bluffs around it, the Virgin River nearby, and the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and Confluence Park within easy reach. Both reservoirs stay ice-free year-round. The city counts 153 miles of trails, existing and planned, inside its borders, and dinosaur tracks lie just south of the city line.

The homes

The old downtown runs along State Street. South of it, much of the land is agricultural-residential, with large lots and some small livestock, in areas known as South Fields and Bench Lake. Near Sand Hollow State Park, large resort neighborhoods have recreation built in. Lot size, HOA terms and water service vary by area, so ask early.

Living here

Downtown has the Heritage Park Museum, Pioneer Park, the Pioneer Corner Museum and the library, and the calendar includes Peach Days, a mountain-biking festival and the Hurricane Half Marathon. The city keeps 17 parks, including a dog park, a BMX park, two splash pads and a fishing pond. Sand Hollow and Quail Creek offer boating, paddling, fishing and camping; one Confluence Park trailhead is in Hurricane.
