St. George, Utah

The hub of Utah’s red-rock southwest.

IThe Guide

St. George is the largest city in Washington County, with 95,342 residents at the 2020 census, and the county seat since 1863. It was founded in 1861 as a cotton-growing settlement, and the old center survives as a historic downtown of galleries, shops and a walking tour. Utah Tech University is here, as is St. George Regional Airport, the region’s gateway by air.

Around the center the city spreads across red sandstone bluffs, river bottom and black volcanic rock. The city owns four golf courses, the oldest from the mid-1960s, and Entrada at Snow Canyon and The Ledges look toward Snow Canyon State Park. Snow Canyon is 15 minutes from town, Zion National Park about 45 minutes, and Las Vegas about 90 minutes.

IIThe Place

Inside St. George

The setting

St. George lies at about 2,900 feet in the St. George Valley, where features of the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau meet the Mojave Desert, among red rock mesas and waterways. Rainfall averages about 8 inches a year, and summer temperatures run well into the 100s. The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, 62,000 acres set aside in 1996 to protect the desert tortoise, has its visitor center in the city, and Southgate Golf Club weaves alongside the Santa Clara River.

The homes

Neighborhoods run from the streets around the historic center to bluff and hillside neighborhoods on the edges of the city, including those at the edge of Snow Canyon near the courses at Entrada and The Ledges. The city is large, so lot size, views, water service and HOA rules change from one neighborhood to the next, and elevation varies by several hundred feet. Nightly-rental rules differ by zone, so ask.

Living here

Pioneer Park, in the heart of the city, is a sunrise-hike spot, and downtown has galleries, locally owned shops and a historic walking tour. The city’s arts resources include the St. George Museum of Art, and the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm shows dinosaur tracks almost 200 million years old. The calendar includes the St. George Art Festival and the St. George Marathon; Tonaquint Park and four city golf courses fill out the list.
