Toquerville sits in a wide valley along Ash Creek, at the base of a mountain capped with black lava rock, about 30 miles south of Cedar City and less than 20 miles north of St. George. Interstate 15 exit 27 is the northern gateway to Zion National Park, and State Route 17 runs through the center of town. The Pine Valley Mountains stand ten miles to the northwest.
Toquerville was settled in 1858 and named for a local chief; the word toquer means black, which suited the lava rock on the hill. The town became known for fruit, nuts, figs and grapes, once had a thriving cotton gin and an early winery, and was incorporated in 1917. The history is still visible in the town hall and in many of the historic homes around town, which have their own walking tour.
